How to Open HEIC Files on Windows, Mac, Android, and the Web

Open an iPhone HEIC photo without renaming the extension, and convert a copy only when another app needs JPG or PNG.

HEIC is a common filename extension for photos stored using the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF). Apple adopted HEIF on iPhone and iPad because it can preserve strong image quality with less storage than a traditional JPEG. The problem appears when an older app, Windows setup, website, or business system does not recognize the format.

Do not fix the problem by changing .heic to .jpg in the filename. Renaming changes the label, not the encoded image data. Use a compatible viewer or perform a real conversion to create a separate JPG or PNG copy.

HEIC and HEIF: what is the difference?

HEIF is the broader image-container format. HEIC is the extension commonly used for HEIF images encoded with HEVC technology on Apple devices. In everyday use, people often say ‘HEIC photo’ and ‘HEIF photo’ interchangeably. A HEIF container can store more than a basic still image, including image sequences and additional data.

How to open HEIC on Windows

Current Windows installations may need the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s support guidance also notes that HEVC media can require an additional extension. After installing the needed support, restart the Photos app and open the file again. The exact requirement depends on the way the image was encoded and the software installed on the PC.

  1. Try the Photos appDouble-click the HEIC file. If it opens, no conversion is needed for viewing.
  2. Follow the extension promptIf Windows says an extension is required, use the official Microsoft Store link shown by the system and restart Photos after installation.
  3. Use File Opener when neededIf you cannot install an extension or another app requires JPEG, open File Opener in a modern browser and select the HEIC image.
  4. Convert a separate copyChoose JPG for a broadly compatible photo or PNG when lossless graphics or transparency are genuinely needed.
  5. Verify the exportOpen the converted file and check orientation, color, dimensions, and important metadata before sending or deleting anything.

How to open or convert HEIC on a Mac

Apple added HEIF support with macOS High Sierra 10.13 and iOS 11. On a supported Mac, open an HEIC image in Preview or Photos. To create a compatible copy in Preview, use File, then Export, and choose JPEG or PNG. Keep the original if you may want to edit or export it differently later.

Android and browser options

Many current Android phones and photo apps can display HEIC or HEIF, but support varies by device version and app. If the gallery cannot open the file, update the operating system and app first. A browser-based File Opener can be convenient when you need to inspect or convert one image without changing device-wide settings.

Microsoft also says OneDrive on the web can preview HEIF and HEVC media in a browser, though opening downloaded files locally can still require a codec. This distinction explains why a photo may look fine in cloud storage but fail after it is saved to the PC.

Should you convert HEIC to JPG or PNG?

DestinationGood choiceReason
Email, forms, ordinary photosJPGBroad compatibility and efficient photographic compression
Website product photoJPG or WebPEfficient delivery; use the format accepted by the workflow
Graphic with transparencyPNGSupports transparent pixels and sharp edges
Archive/editing sourceKeep HEIC plus an exportPreserves the original while adding compatibility

JPG is usually the sensible conversion for a normal camera photo. PNG does not improve detail that was missing from the original; it can simply create a much larger file. For a deeper comparison, read WebP vs JPG vs PNG.

How to make future iPhone photos more compatible

Apple recommends High Efficiency capture for its storage benefits, but it also provides a Most Compatible camera setting on supported devices. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, Camera, Formats, then choose Most Compatible when broad compatibility matters more than storage efficiency. New photos are saved using older formats such as JPEG or H.264. This does not convert photos already in the library.

Common HEIC problems

  • The file was renamed to .jpg but still contains HEIC data.
  • The viewer supports basic HEIF but not the codec or advanced data used by the file.
  • The image opens in cloud storage but not in the local desktop app.
  • Color looks different after conversion because color profiles were handled differently.
  • Rotation changes because one app ignores orientation metadata.
  • A live or burst photo contains related media that a simple JPG export does not preserve.
  • The converted photo becomes much larger because PNG was chosen for ordinary photography.

When a HEIC image contains text you need to understand, open or convert it first and then use Image Translator. If the new JPG is too large for a portal, follow the exact-size image compression guide.
