Compress Video Online
Make a video smaller with a target file size. Compress short clips on your device without a server upload.
Let’s compress video.
Add video files to get started.
Three steps. One less task.
- 01
Add a video under the browser tool's 250 MB limit and enter your target size.
- 02
Compress the clip, keeping the tab open while the browser encodes it.
- 03
Check the actual output size, moving scenes and audio before sending the result.
Good to know
The tool adjusts bitrate and re-encodes to MP4 without applying a resize or frame-rate filter. Fine detail can still be lost. Use Resize video separately if you need smaller dimensions, and compare the output with your destination's current upload limit. An exact byte size is not guaranteed.
Compress a video toward a maximum file size
When compression is needed, the tool encodes an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. It calculates a bitrate from the clip's duration and your size budget, with up to three encoding attempts. It does not apply a resize or frame-rate filter; use Resize video separately if you want fewer pixels.
The browser must be able to read the source duration. A file that already fits is returned unchanged, including its original format. Targets below 14,000 bytes per second of footage are rejected, and an accepted target can still be missed. Shorten the clip or raise the budget if the result is too large or motion becomes unclear.
A few things you might ask.
Can I reduce file size without changing resolution?
This compressor changes encoding bitrate without applying a scaling filter. Lower bitrate can still reduce visual quality at the same dimensions. Inspect fine text, faces and moving areas in the output.
Why does a MOV or MKV fail even though I can select it?
An accepted extension does not guarantee that the browser can read its duration or that the processing engine can decode its codec. Try an accessible MP4 source or a shorter export from the application that created it.
Which source files can I try?
The file picker accepts MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and M4V. Sources above 250 MB are rejected. Codec compatibility and available browser memory also matter; a recognized extension does not guarantee successful processing.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
This tool processes files on your device. Moving a file between Fitabyte tools uses a one-use browser handoff that expires after 10 minutes; abandoned handoffs are cleared on your next visit. Your original stays unchanged.
Can I use this tool on my phone?
Use a current browser and keep the tab open during processing. Available memory and processing speed depend on your device; start with a smaller file for large PDFs or video.
